This “Romance” was originally composed by Amy Beach for violin and piano for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where she premiered the piece with its dedicatee, violinist Maud Powell. The performance was part of the Women’s Musical Congress, which Powell helped to organize. Following the premiere, Powell would go on to perform the Romance several more times that season, and the two would become close friends and trusted musical associates
