This wind quintet is based at least in part on Paul Critser’s musical In the Colony, which is believed to be at least partially lost. The first movement is lively and in a loose five-part rondo form, containing pastoral passages juxtaposed with references to Tristan und Isolde. The second movement is an eccentric waltz that acts as the piece’s scherzo. The third and final movement carries the subtitle “Kursk” and is reminiscent of an action movie chase scene.
