Samuel Coleridge-Taylor – Legend

Instrumentation:

2.2.2.2 - 4.2.0.0 - timp - harp - strings - solo vln

Duration:

7'

Coleridge-Taylor wrote *Legend* in 1896 as a composition exercise while still a student at the Royal College of Music. This should not be seen as an indication of student-level quality, though; by anyone’s standards, this is a mature work, receiving its premiere at RCM on February 15, 1897 with Charles Villiers Stanford conducting and Marie Motto (the work’s dedicatee) soloing; the work would then be published later that year by Augener & Co.

NOTE: This piece includes a piano reduction so that a violin soloist could play the piece with piano accompaniment rather than a full orchestra.
